MARBLETOWN YOUTH & RECREATION COMMISSIOn
Monthly Meeting
Monday, July 18, 2011
ATTENDANCE: Kathie Hikade, Dave Nichols, Barbara Sickler, Sandy Sheeley, and Larry Skalla.
New Business: It was reported that summer camp is full with a waiting list for both groups and that attendance is great! The Park is booked for all weekends thru August.
Trash collection was discussed. Sandy has asked for an opinion of a carry in/carry out policy. The main reason for considering this is the money that would be saved from doing away with the dumpster. The approximate cost is $1200 per year. The goal was not to reduce the budget by this amount but to have this amount for other needed improvements at the park. Steve has asked a representative from Waste Mgt. to look over our account and see if there is any way to reduce the cost. It was also suggested to experiment in the months of Sept. and Oct. by removing the dumpster to see if there were a lot of problems with the change. We will wait for a report from the rep. to see what is offered.
Teen Center has sufficient funds to operate this fall, with possibly a shortened season. The funds were donated from an estate and from the RV teacher's union.
The side set of stone steps at the Community Center are in the process of being replaced. Doug Stedge is doing the work. The cost of replacement is $3200. The custom railing is additional.
Larry reported that the July 4th race was a success. It was a beautiful day with no problems reported. The only thing that was again considered for next year was the possibility of closing the road.
Meeting adjourned at 6:30pm.
Monday, April 18, 2011
ATTENDANCE: Kathie Hikade, Steve Schneider, Gail Wikane, Barbara Sickler, Sandy Sheeley, Diane Paulson, Larry Skalla and Julia Bronson.
Old Business: A summary of the Teen center activities was presented. They are currently operating from a $5000 grant from Senator Bonicic. The center is open 3 days a week. The Honor Society is also running a program on Wednesday afternoons for mostly middle school ages.
Youth summer programs were discussed. Camp sign up is going well with elementary camp and preschool filled at this point. Sandy reported that most of last year's staff are returning and interviews are being held this week for CIT's. The budget is tight, therefore CIT's may only work 3 days a week instead of 5 with the elementary group.
Park business was discussed. Plans are all set to remove the fire pit, paint the bathroom floors, (with paint that contains sand) fixing the roof, etc.
A discussion took place on the smoking policy in the park. The town has received correspondence from the county requesting that towns initiate a no smoking policy in their parks. The Youth Commission agreed that there shouldn't be smoking in the playground, beach and pavilion area but also acknowledged that there have been no complaints about this issue. Some took issue with the fact that we would have to spend money on signage when there wasn't a problem and no means of enforcement. The issue will be discussed at the next town board meeting.
There has been a request for information on if it's possible for someone to bring a hotdog cart into the park at busy times. The fact that the soccer program sells snacks for fundraising was brought up. Sandy was asked to contact the two parties to see if something could be worked out.
Toddler story hour will be held for the month of May as a test program.
